Cuzco to Puno

Nice cruise through a wide valley that looked like the McKenzie country for miles and also at 10,ooo ft. But great riding after spending the last several days in the mountains. We then arrived at a port called Puno at the head of lake Tiicaca.
Doesn't look much but the down town was much better
that is after spending almost an hour at this stop until we split off and hooked up streets light below until we got into the town
we hooked up for the night with these 2 from Argentina who have talked us out of going to Bolivia and hooking back to the coast and into Araquipa which has the deepest canyon in the world. I'm in need of a new rear tyre and there is a better chance of getting one there also that La Paz is to be avoided.
So infact thats what were doing and more to follow....

Machu Picchu

There's nothing we can say that hasn't already been said about this place. Words can't express, so if there is a chance to see it it's worth the 5 hours travel via bus/train/bus, then 5 hours spent there then the return to Cuzco.

Still heading to Cuzco...

Next day was sunny and warm.... at first and a great ride through a tight gourge
But once in a high town it was back to climbing over the Andies
and with it also comes the rain again. Got cold at the top but lost altitude very fast into the next valley which is where we were heADING
Which is Cuzco. This place is 10700ft and other than a mild headache was great to see. The Spaniards over run this place in the 16 century and of course it the stepping stone to Machu Picchu which we went to the next day
However need to get back on the road so that days story will follow......

Heading to Cuzco

We started to head to Cusco which I was thinking would be 1 day ride. Started out well but after climbing constantly we finally topped out onto a high plateau which was around 13000 ft. poor bike was struggling as we where when it started to rain and get very cold....
tea break in order and try to warm up on the other side
We even climbed high than this again
Not that these kids knew any different re altitude or cold
Then the welcome drop to the other side. It had taken us about 8 hrs to cover 360k's of what I'd consider fairly hard riding. so another night in a small village then onto Cuzco...

!st day with 2 up...

All started just as it should....more of this kind of riding which I must say while can get boring is still rather fantastic. Winds come up now and then but not as bad as it has been further North.
Although in the desert, there are still areas that through irrigation can be productive even this this god forsaken place..... But still pushing on to Nazca which was a 45ok ride and going well, should bethere mid afternoon with time to settle. 20k's out I though it didn't feel right......
Let me explain, whilst Marks trying tofix thepuncture..... we were overtaking a truck on a piece of tarmac beaten relentlessly into fixed grooves ,and got a bit of a wobble on...no worries, just a blip..one that in fact took an hour and a half to fix.....the removal of the whole wheel, a ride into a small town with a very friendly family of 1locals,looking for the mechanic in another part of town on his lunch break, and finally on our way
Big thanks to these guys who we would not have had the pleasure of meeting without our puncture and who the guy on the far right was the local policia, this i got to find out (after going with him by myself) when he produced a handgun and waved it at me.

Time to get back on the road

After doing what little things needed to get done on Mana, I finally got to meet Cath at the airport late on Wednesday night. She arrived in one piece and looking fantastic as always. The next couple of days where spent hanging out at Bill and Fannys place on the Coast.
It is still on the shoulder season so we had the beach to ourselves although weather was not always the best.... but hey what a place to hang out at.
So being the great hosts that they are Bill had another couple over for our final night in Lima. We had planned to leave earlier but since we were asked to stay for the weekend our arms were twisted.......
had some amazing sunsets from the balcony and this night proved no different.
Next morning after repacking the bike to accommodate the extra wash bag.... she never could travel light..... we were on road and heading South.Alot of unknown at this point due to set up and handling but all will be revealed in the coming month....
